Salford Royal ends its paper round
Real live EPR gives clinical staff immediate access to patient records
As a result of the continuing roll-out of its iSOFT EPR, many consultations at the Salford Royal Hospitals Trust are now virtually paper-record free.
“By using the capability of iSOFT’s i.Clinical Manager to support discipline-specific information requirements, we can call up virtually all the results and background information we need instantaneously from one integrated record. In some specialties around 95% of consultations are now entirely based on results, notes and correspondence called up from the EPR on screen, and not dependent on the access to the patients’ written records”.
“We are using i.Clinical Manager to support our ward rounds by accessing the latest patient information immediately before we start.” adds Dr Young, who is also the Lead for Informatics at the Trust. “Furthermore, we can create discharge summaries in i.Clinical Manager and write the accompanying out-patient prescriptions, thereby streamlining procedures, saving valuable staff administration time and ensuring prompt accurate communications for GPs and patients.”

The i.Clinical Manager-based EPR is also proving to be a vital tool in Emergency Medicine and Surgery.

“Being able to gain immediate answers to key clinical questions without the inevitable delay entailed in retrieving case notes makes a real difference to how we assess and treat our patients”.
To maximise its effectiveness, everyone within the Trust, from support assistants to consultants, has access to i.Clinical Manager, with appropriately graded access rights to protect patient confidentiality. From its inception, the system has been designed to support over 600 concurrent users without any reduction in its response speed.
Part of the success of i.Clinical Manager has been the ease with which the functionality of previous ‘stand alone’ clinical systems (e.g. diabetes, obstetrics) has been re-provided and enhanced within the generic EPR platform. Plans are also well advanced to scan dermatological, retinal and endoscopic images into i.Clinical Manager, and to introduce in-patient electronic prescribing and order communications.
In the medium term, Dr Young is keen to explore accessing information at the patient’s bedside, possibly using Tablet PCs communicating with a wireless network. This approach can be accommodated using forthcoming versions of i.Clinical Manager, which have been written to exploit the benefits of Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC operating system and its digital ink capabilities.
