German region chooses iSOFT’s LORENZO solution

Following the successful conclusion of an extensive tendering process, the North Saxony Telematics Group has selected the LORENZO solution from iSOFT, a leading provider of innovative healthcare IT, to realise one of Germany’s largest telematics projects. This project, promoted by the Ministry of Social Services of the State of Saxony, will see the creation of a joint regional communication and co-ordination infrastructure based on care pathways and universal patient record for healthcare institutions in North Saxony.

The project’s objective is to improve the quality and efficiency of treatment for patients with special diseases in regional competency centres. Therefore, eight regional hospitals have joined forces in the North Saxony Telematics Group and agreed, together with local partners, on guidelines and the highest standards for the treatment of breast cancer patients, diabetics and other patient groups. By building up competency centres and virtual centres for radiology, pathology and other cross-sectional disciplines, the respective strengths of the various partners will be maximised.

The project has been made possible by leveraging LORENZO’s flexible service-oriented architecture which provides the necessary interoperability to integrate the heterogeneous IT components of the competency centres into the overall universal patient record. This facilitates communication and provides the means by which comprehensive patient information will be made accessible across the entire region. In this way, integrated care pathways and quality management functions can guide the care process and offer intelligent decision-making support at the point of care, with the latest patient information, regardless of the care setting.

In addition to the universal patient record, the integrated solution will also enable the creation of a regional repository service with integrated image and report communication for radiology and pathology. By allowing constant access to complete patient medical information – including all images – extensive duplicate examinations can potentially be prevented and further treatment can be linked to previous therapies.

The service-oriented architecture and healthcare information model offered by LORENZO are ideal for satisfying these demands. Through the integration of the various hospital information systems with RIS (radiology information system) and PACS (picture archiving communication system) solutions deployed throughout the region and the use of LORENZO terminology services, data editing and preparation can be realised to effectively and clearly describe clinical contexts across the association.

Dr Karsten Güldner, Director of St. George Clinic, said: “The implementation of integrated care structures demands completely new IT concepts with the highest level of flexibility. The modern architecture and the solution’s high integration potential were decisive in choosing LORENZO as the basis for the region’s decision. The project is being supported by the Institute of Telematics, which will guarantee content and quality, in order to provide LORENZO with the necessary medical content/expertise.”

Jörg Trinemeier, Managing Director of iSOFT Deutschland, said: “For iSOFT Deutschland, this decision confirms the product strategy of the entire iSOFT Group, which, as can be seen with LORENZO, is focused on comprehensive processes and standards for the entire health economy. We provide extensive support for the monitoring of the project by a scientific institute. Together with the institute, we are creating the foundations for the most modern integrated care system in Germany.”
