iSOFT strengthens clinician access

iSOFT, an IBA Health Group company, has signed a five-year, world-wide agreement with global healthcare data provider CMPMedica, to integrate its range of drug information services into iSOFT solutions. This agreement will give iSOFT customers better access to the drug knowledge they need to make safe prescribing and dispensing decisions.

Most patients leave a clinician visit with at least one prescription, and everyone — especially the patient — benefits from enhanced information access and greater safety. Electronic prescribing, often called e-prescribing, creates an infrastructure that benefits all stakeholders and provides a platform from which to expand care management.

Medicines make up about 20% of all the things that go wrong in healthcare, yet a considerable proportion of these events are preventable. Unsafe care is also costly. Inappropriate use of medicines in 2002 in Australia cost approximately A$380 million per year in the public hospital system alone (AIHW2002).

E-prescribing, medication management and drug and allergy decision support applications have existed for more than ten years and the maturity of technology and applications in this area now make them truly deployable across the entire healthcare sector.

Dr Michael Dahlweid, iSOFT’s Chief Medical Officer, said: “The agreement with CMPMedica will provide improved and real-time access to CMPMedica’s sophisticated knowledge bases, providing clinicians using iSOFT products with access to a wide range of up-to-date and fully integrated decision support modules that are internationally referenced and continuously reviewed.

"Interacting with iSOFT products, these decision support tools will provide the capacity to alert clinicians to interactions between medicines, food, health conditions and patient allergies and more, making patient safety the priority in a world of increasing drug complexity.

“This new service will strengthen the quality of the drug content available within iSOFT products giving our customers ready access to the very latest drug and allergy information ensuring that prescribing clinicians have up-to-date and fully integrated drug information to enhance patient treatment and safety.”

The non-exclusive deal allows all iSOFT companies to offer CMPMedica’s drug-related information system, interaction and allergy notifications with updates available to download from iSOFT’s website.

The new service will initially be available to customers in Australia before being integrated with all iSOFT products world-wide. CMPMedica’s MIMS drug information system is already used by primary care customers in Australia, but these will now have the web download option for regular updates.

CMPMedica CEO Henry Elkington said: “We are delighted to further strengthen CMPMedica’s relationship with iSOFT with this world-wide agreement. We are committed to supplying our partners with integrated drug information and decision support based on our established and trusted products which include MIMS, Vidal and Gelbe Liste Pharmindex. Through our partnership with iSOFT, our invaluable content will be available to clinicians around the world, supporting and guiding them in their drug prescribing decisions."
